V-MODA unwraps Vibe II with in-line mic

updated 11:40 am EST, Tue November 11, 2008

V-MODA Vibe II with Mic

V-MODA today broke cover to launch the Vibe II with Mic, the successor to its long-serving Vibe Duo. The iPhone-oriented but not exclusive in-canal earbuds carry a new, machined metal design which V-MODA calls eco-friendly and should also have improved audio. A new 8mm driver is said to have a more organic sound than most and is tuned in favor of the bass response needed for electronic, rock and urban music; the company estimates frequency response at the very low end between just 12Hz and 22Hz.

The company is also determined to improve fit and includes two sets of silicone tips in four sizes as well as add-on ear hooks for athletes and others whose movement tends to jostle the earbuds out of their ideal position.

In its launch form, the Vibe II ships in either chrome-and-red or black color schemes and comes with both a carrying pouch as well as a card that grants access to special podcasts and other content. V-MODA takes preorders starting later today from the Apple Store as well as through its own website, both of which will carry the earphone and microphone combo for $128.

    quality?

If you look on the Apple Store at the comments about the original Duos, people note really bad build quality. I wonder if these will do any better.

    No thank you.

I received a pair of the V-Moda Vibe Duo 'phones for my iPhone last Christmas, 2007. It was a disaster from the beginning. The original pair lasted 2.5 months; had to return them due to an ear cutting out the sound; received the next pair a month later, those lated about 3-4 months before the same thing happened again.

V-Moda was nice enough to replace both pairs, but that was it for me. I traded in the Vibe Duos for a pair of Shure SE110's, and have been using them for a month, and they're great (got the MPA too).

I'd be curious to know how these newly redesigned 'phones work. I was a fan of the V-Moda sound (the Shure's don't have as much low-end unless EQ is turned on), and really liked the fabric-wrapped cord; but the construction was bad. I hope this redesign holds up better.
