Fujitsu intros green HDDs
Fujitsu on Tuesday announced the upcoming release of its 2.5-inch MJA2 BH- and MJA2 CH-series hard disk drives, both 5400RPM, SATA units with 500GB of capacity. The MJA2 CH drives sport AES hardware-based full disk encryption (FDE) with a 256-bit key size. This hardware-based encryption offers greater security than software-based protection, as the user password is not obtainable when the drives are powered off.
Apart from this distinction, both new series feature improvements over their predecessors that include a higher resistance to operating shock, 27 percent faster internal transfer rates and a low read/write power consumption of 1.4W, which Fujitsu claims is the lowest in the class and a third lower than previous models.
Part of the Fujitsu Green Policy Innovation program, the new drives are the first to be halogen-free and made to meet the RoHS standards that aim to reduce hazardous substance content in electronics.
Whether the 500GB drives, the largest to feature FDE protection, will beat Seagate's recently announced 500GB to market remains to be seen, as neither release dates nor pricing information were announced by Fujitsu. A new Hitachi drive with similar storage and security has also been released today.
