2Wire's MediaPoint box delivers HD over broadband

updated 03:45 pm EST, Mon November 10, 2008

2Wire intros MediaPoint

2Wire has recently introduced its MediaPoint set-top box that is designed to deliver HD video content via a broadband connection. The MediaPoint will offer remote access options, allowing users to control its functions over the web, and connects to home networks via a wired or wireless connection. It will also stream media from connected USB flash drives and external hard drives thanks to built-in USB ports. There is of course an HDMI output, and the device is compatible with UPnP- and DLNA-enabled devices.

The MediaPoint will double as a media extender in a user's home network, letting him enjoy photos or music stored on their PCs. 2Wire also promises Internet browsing capability via the TV set, although the interface method or controller/keyboard, has not been revealed. Users will also be able to access Internet radio stations.

2Wire will not sell the box directly to consumers however, as it has not named a content provider. Instead, it will market the MediaPoint to its traditional customers, namely broadband service providers such as AT&T, who will then offer specific content and options for the MediaPoint under their own respective brands. While no specific launch dates or prices are known, it is speculated that the MediaPoint will sell for less than $100, with some sort of a subscription service likely subsidizing that price.
