October browser share shows Vista up, Mac down

Vista up, Mac down in brow

Windows' online presence increased during the month of October at the expense of the Mac, new figures from Net Applications indicate. In tracking the prevalence of operating systems online, the company has determined that Windows' marketshare rose 0.19 percent to hit 90.46 in October, as a result of a 5.24 percent increase in the use of Windows Vista. Mac OS X's share in fact fell 0.24 percent during the month to reach 8.21, and while iPhone usage has continued growth and sits at 0.33 percent, the rate of expansion dropped to 3.12 percent versus the 6.67 percent achieved in September.

The ascension of Windows also appears to have impacted Linux, which slid a substantial 22 percent in October, despite the existence of Linux-based netbooks.

Fortune observes that the statistics do not necessarily reflect computer sales, as Mac shipments rose 21 percent worldwide in the last quarter, and roughly 30 percent within the US. More critically, the data produced by Net Applications only reflects the number of visits from a particular OS, which can be disproportionately weighted by factors like social trends.

This does not say much for the machine that its running on either. More Mac users might have put Vista on bootcamp as well.

    Re: and

So you're saying that Mac users would install AND use Vista? And no one says this has anything to do with machine.

But I'm surprised no one has mentioned the likely cause of this. All those people installing and using vista and searching for ways to fix all the problems.

Come on people! It's like you're not even trying today!

...this increase is due to all those folks posting their "I'm A PC" videos. None of whom apparently know how to center or focus a webcam. Based on the food themed commercial now running, this is either an army of masquerading Mac users stuffing the ballot box to make PC users look like fools or there is lead paint in the Vista packaging.

Never thought I'd say this, but Testudo gets a plus 1 for that post. What's the world coming to?

It DOES identify the OS on which the browser is running.

It's probably because of the CrossOver giveaway. :-P

What they don't take into account is that PC users may visit a website multiple times trying to get it to load properly before finally giving up and just viewing it on their iPhone.
