Microsoft puts "I'm a PC" kiosk near Apple store

MS Kiosk Near Apple Store

Microsoft has taken to placing its own physical presence in front of Apple's retail stores to drive home its "I'm a PC" marketing campaign, an AppleInsider reader has shown through a photo. The Windows developer has put a kiosk in front of at least the Apple Store Bullring in Birmingham, UK that lets users record their own "I'm a PC" segment for contribution to the campaign, which is entering a new phase as it accepts user uploads and submissions rather than just professionally-chosen spokespeople.

Neither Apple nor Microsoft has commented on the placement. The effort nonetheless reflects the goal of the campaign to counter what Microsoft believes is an unfair stereotype of Windows that has hurt Vista's public image. Multiple initiatives have already been launched that directly shadow Apple and include Genius-like Microsoft Gurus at third-party stores, the early Seinfeld teaser ads and a "leaked" company e-mail ahead of the new MacBook launch perpetuating notions that Apple unfairly limits hardware choices and prices.

The existing "I'm a PC" campaign, which joins a larger $300 million effort, has so far earned mixed reactions and has been outperformed by the Seinfeld campaign despite more directly targeting Apple.

    I know...

    I know what M$ is trying to do! They're negatively affecting public perception of Apple by placing their "I'm a PC" ad in proximity to Apple Retail Stores in hopes of a "guilt by association".

    You see, if M$ can pass off their horrible marketing campaign for Apple's, it could help M$ AND damage Apple's positive public perception at the same time.

    Well... At least what USED to be Apple's extremely positive public perception. After the whole Prop 8 issue, there's a good number of people with a much dimmer view of Apple than before. Sorry Apple, but that's the truth.

    Right, because Apple actually takes a stand against bigots and religious nutcases in the world (which, I take it, you are part of, Smurfman?) and that suddenly makes them into a bad company?

    Personally, it would make me give them even more business -- I appreciate them backing their internal policies up with actions.

    Aside from that -- what exactly is wrong with affording people the same rights, or rather, in maintaining they keep the same rights they recently gained?

    Allowing anyone to marry certainly doesn't hurt anyone -- except the self-perception of bigots and idiots.

    Last gasp...

    ...of desperation in a paradigm shift that may soon reach the epidemic tipping point - if I saw this kind of tactic upon checking out the competition it might REMIND me of the 'Vista Blues' & reinforce my doubts - and after seeing the stunning hardware & software actually drive Apple sales ! Keep it up MS ! ! !

    As always, MS cannot leave one square inch of their display/ad/box/whatever unfilled.

    The Apple store just has its big Apple. The MS display is cluttered -- like Windows I guess.

    Sour grapes?

    This is funny. Ideally such competition would be great if two similar products were competing. Unfortunately MS Windows is so so bad that it smells of desperation. If MS is really serious about this then they should put up both positive and negative comments left by users. Which of course they will not.

    Unfortunately I am a XP and Vista user at work (no choice) and a proud mac user at home. Let me tell you that both XP and Vista are simply HORRIBLE. So the Apple ads are not unfair they are just the truth - with a twist of humor thrown in. :-)
