Xbox 360 update to add HD Netflix streaming

updated 09:45 am EDT, Wed October 29, 2008

Xbox 360 HD Netflix

Microsoft's New Xbox Experience will come with the surprise addition of HD video streaming over Netflix, an early Engadget hands-on shows. While every Netflix-capable device to date has been limited to standard-definition versions of videos, including Blu-ray players from LG Samsung, the Xbox 360 after its November 19th upgrade will get about 300 titles in HD that include both movies and TV shows.

Both regular and HD content will require an Xbox Live Gold membership on top of a Netflix subscription that qualifies for the rental service's Watch Instantly feature, which includes all but the most basic plans. Watching the services themselves is free.

The effort further sets up Netflix and the Xbox 360 as joint rivals to both the PlayStation 3's own video store as well as the Apple TV, which along with the VUDU Box has been one of the few networked media hub to offer paid, on-demand HD viewing. Neither of these two, however, have offered an unlimited streaming service.

This announcement covers the addition of HD streaming capabilities, not NetFlix coming to XBOX Live in the first place.

The reason it is relevant news is because the service is a direct competitor to the Apple TV and iTunes Store.

    awesome news!

It's awesome to finally have Netflix for Xbox 360 users. Now we can enjoy watching videos online whenever we want with the use of our Xbox 360. These devices would require internet connection though, and it would be great to get them connected wirelessly through a wireless network in your home. However, old Xbox 360s aren't WiFi-enabled. You have nothing to worry though, here's a solution for that problem. Check out the Xbox 360 Internet Connection Kit from Netgear, it acts as a WiFi adapter giving wireless internet connectivity for your Xbox 360, and it also works for your PS2, PS3, and PC gaming.
