Samsung shows 0.05mm thick OLED display

Samsung Flapping OLED

Samsung SDI today revealed one of the thinnest displays ever at the FPD display expo. By using low-molecular organic substances, low-temperature polysilicon transistors and a special membrane sealing method, the company has developed a four-inch OLED display that measures just 0.05mm (0.002in) thick; the display is so thin that Samsung nicknames it the "flapping display" for its ability to flap in the wind.

The screen makes few sacrifices to reach its dimensions and generates a very high 100,000:1 contrast ratio as well as 200cd/m2 brightness at its native 480x272 resolution. Unlike most LCDs, the OLED is completely color-accurate and covers 100 percent of the NTSC color range used for TV in the US and Japan.

Samsung hasn't said if or when it will put the new display into production, though the size and thinness of the panel suit it to portable media players, GPS devices, and either large smartphones or mobile Internet devices. [via Tech-On]
