Fission 1.6 audio file editor saves iPhone ringtones
Rogue Amoeba has released the latest version of its audio file editing utility, Fission 1.6, which can now save iPhone ringtones. The program is claimed to offer lossless editing of MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, and AIFF files. The iPhone ringtones can be created from any audio file source supported by Quicktime. After the file is opened, it is cropped to the appropriate length, and then exported into the iTunes library with all needed parameters, ready to sync with the device.
Fission allows files to be cropped or merged, with functions to split a long recording into multiple tracks or remove unwanted audio from within the recording. Audio volume and gain can be adjusted, or the track normalized. Fission 1.6 is available now for $32, or as a free download for previously registered users.

Claims
"The program is claimed to offer lossless editing of MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, and AIFF files".
I'd like to personally vouch that I think their claims are legitimate. As far as editing goes, the resolution of deleting seems to be at the frame level and that is probably part of being lossless. The primary benefit is in editing already lossy files without further losses. There is no particular benefit to editing most AIFF files with this as opposed to something like Amadeus since I think most who work with AIFF will have them lossless to begin with. Everything that I think can be done in lossless is allowed and implemented pretty well in this software and it is ultra fast at saving changes to a single file.
