NVIDIA GF 9400 for Desktop

Following last week's introduction of the GeForce 9400M for MacBooks and other notebooks, NVIDIA has also introduced the GeForce 9300 and 9400 for desktop systems. The two not only support the full range of Celeron, Pentium and Core 2 desktop processors but carry roughly the same 16-core graphics processing as the 9400M and thus have much faster 3D performance than Intel's GMA 4500.

Adding the graphics also gives full hardware HD video decoding as well as support for CUDA and a smaller overall footprint for the chipset, leaving more room for RAM or PCI Express slots.

Either mainboard supports one PCI Express X16 slot and as many as four X1 slots or five regular PCI slots. It also handles either DDR2 or DDR3 memory and can use Hybrid SLI to switch between a dedicated GeForce card and the 9300/9400 graphics core to save power in less demanding situations.

Several third-party mainboard producers are shipping products based on the new NVIDIA platform, including ASUS, EVGA and XFX; the technology is also available to large-scale PC makers, though unlike Apple's announcement last week there have been no immediate partners for complete systems.

I suspect this is what we will see in the next Mac Mini, a 9400 or 9400M. We would all love to see dedicated video come back to the Mac Mini, but this new chipset sounds promising.
