RIM making AT&T Storm, QWERTY/touch hybrid?

RIM ATT Storm Rumor

Research in Motion is set to significantly expand its touchscreen lineup beyond just the core BlackBerry Storm, early rumors floated by BGR suggest. The Canadian company is reportedly readying a device like the Storm for its Wireless Enterprise Symposium in May and may involve a version of the Storm with HSDPA-based 3G for North American frequencies. Which carriers would receive the example are unknown, though AT&T's exclusivity deal for the 3G-capable Bold and the need to support Rogers in Canada would suggest a model with 850MHz 3G rather than the 1,700MHz used for T-Mobile.

A more significant, new class of smartphone is also claimed in the works at RIM. Similar to Palm's Centros and Treos, the new device would resemble a cross between the Bold and Storm and include both a traditional, fixed QWERTY keyboard but a touchscreen to allow the same variety of apps that will come for touch BlackBerry models. Its release and other technical details are very much unknown and unlikely to be revealed in more detail until 2009.

    RIM is throwing the...

proverbial kitchen sink at the iPhone. They'll have about four models to compete with the iPhone. It's a good solution if it works. I suppose Apple could easily expand it's iPhone lineup, but probably doesn't feel it's necessary. I'll be anxious to see if Apple applies it's billet/CNC milling technology to the iPhone line.
