Inventory leak shows no price drop for new MacBooks

updated 03:20 pm EDT, Mon October 13, 2008

MacBook prices leaked?

An alleged Best Buy inventory printout for new MacBook models shows pricing unchanged from current versions, according to a leak on Gizmodo. The list uses color codes to represent the different models, and mentions prices ranging from $1,100 for the 13-inch base model up to $2,800 for the 17-inch MacBook Pro. Information such as dimensions and stock dates are believed to be temporary placeholders.

If the pricing from the inventory listing is accurate, it would indicate that the speculation of price drops is false. Analyst firm Piper Jaffray anticipates an entry-level cost of $900 to $1,000, pending Apple's formal announcement on Tuesday. Historically, Piper analysts have been fairly accurate with their forecasts, and the prices on the Best Buy inventory sheet could also be placeholders, which would only be changed after Apple's press event.

    hmmm...

    not buying this at all...

    GREEN = $1,999.99 - 15" MacBook Pro base model
    PURPLE = $2,799.99 - 17" MacBook Pro base model
    YELLOW = $1,499.99 - 13" MacBook top end model
    BLUE = $2,499.99 - 15" MacBook Pro mid model
    ORANGE = $1,299.99 - 13" MacBook mid Model
    RED = $1,099.99 - 13" MacBook base model

    I dont think Apple would use colors on the pro line at all... The only documentation I saw was the $1999 price point for a MBP. That's all.

    If the pricing from the inventory listing is accurate, it would indicate that the speculation of price drops is false.

    The ONLY thing on the inventory sheet is $1,999 for the Mac Book Pro. So Apple may not be dropping the high end, but it sure could drop on the low end.

    Once again, monkey like reporting here, only on MacNN... wait, is that an insult to monkeys?

    Best Buy

    I'm sure they don't know the new pricing, that would be to stupid for Apple to do.

    I would assume the color names are placeholders, not some sort of description that MBP's are going the way of the 2nd gen iMac...

    Pricing Clarification

    I used to work for a Canadian affiliate of Best Buy. When we got new inventory SKUs, the SKU would need a price (even if one was not supplied to us by the manufacturer). So Best Buy may have just used the current pricing. I remember seeing a new model of laptop show up, with a bizzare price that seemed too expensive or just really inacurate. Then when the product arrived to be displayed and ready for sale, the price would be adjusted appropriately. As for colours, I have never seen that before. Usually they use the model number...

    This was also confirmed by an American Best Buy employee at a different Apple Rumors website.

    Labor is good for a year, as is parts. Phone support is only good for 90 days.

    Then again

    People could save themselves time and effort and just wait until tomorrow afternoon to see what apple hath wrought.

    Oh, right, we all live for the speculation, so we then can complain about how the event sucked and didn't match the unrealistic expectations of the rumors. Or that it sucked because it matched the rumors, so what's the point.

    colors

    The use of colors could indicate a change in naming, probably losing the pro. Probably its just guesswork from Best Buy employees, they read the rumor sites as much as we do. :)
