Spell Catcher X 10.3

Rainmaker Research has released Spell Catcher X 10.3, the latest version of its spellchecking and writing tools. The DirectConnect function instantly displays errors as they appear, allowing for immediate correction or continued working with all of the catches being saved for later fixing. The software is configurable to auto-correct common mistakes, such as inverting two letters in a word.

Users can set the program to alert each mistake with an audible signal. In addition to internal dictionaries, information is gathered from the Internet which provides extra details such as pronunciation. The Mac OS X Spelling Panel is integrated, and support is offered for languages such as French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish. The latest release is said to offer updated dictionaries, a greater vocabulary and better spelling suggestions through a "Proximity Linguistic System."

Spell Catcher X 10.3 runs on Mac OS X 10.4.3 or higher, and is available from Rainmaker for $40. Recent purchasers of earlier versions may be eligible for a free, $15 or $20 upgrade.

Why I use it

One reason I like Spell Catcher is the way the thesaurus automatically conjugate verbs and accounts for plurals. If you look up jumping, it doesn't simply tell you to try jump, it suggests bouncing, bounding, hopping, hurdling, leaping, etc. I just wish their spell suggestions were built into contextual (right-click) menus.

Simply the BEST!

Simply the BEST 40 buck value you can find in Mac software. The guy must live on hot dogs as programs that sell for hundreds more rarely can do as full and complete a job as this puppy does.

One hint, SCX has a series of text manipulating modules so one can do stuff like change cases, remove extra spaces etc. all with hot keys.
