G-Map for iPhone works stand-alone without internet

updated 05:40 pm EDT, Mon October 6, 2008

G Map for iPhone, Touch

XROAD has developed G-Map, a GPS mapping application for the iPhone. The program is stand-alone, allowing users to find their location outside of internet connections and in complete dead zones. A "Real 3D View" is provided for major intersections and highway junctions. POI information includes restaurants, hotels, and leisure destinations, with the ability to edit entries and add personalized memos.

A route preview function is claimed to find the optimum route to destinations. Information can be searched by using phone numbers or latitude/longitude coordinates. The location search works on mountains, oceans, or on the move, according to the company. The app is compatible with the iPhone or iPod touch, although GPS support is only offered for the iPhone 3G. G-Map will be available on iTunes, but pricing information was not provided.

    Data set

I wonder how large this app is going to be if the install comes with all the maps it uses. Maybe they'll have different releases for different geographical regions, to limit the install size, as I could easily see maps for N. America taking several GB of precious local storage.

    Maps

Tom Tom's North America map is about 1GB, so it's feasible for apps to be stand alone and not take the whole space available in the iPhone. This awesome specially when you're travelling and don't want to incur in those extra expensive roaming charges,

    G-Map

From the looks of the "Areas Covered", they should rename it "NE-Map"
