Ukrainian iPhone on Oct. 3

The Ukraine should finally receive the iPhone later this week, the Russian financial paper Kommersant is said to claim. Reports say that the phone will launch overnight between October 2nd and 3rd, and be carried by MTS, with the possibility of more sales through KievStar. This information has not been confirmed by Apple's distributor for the region, Pro Turbo Service, but the company does say it expects the phone to be released in the Ukraine before the end of the year.

A Ukrainian deal would be a natural extension of the one for Russia, where the phone is also going on sale October 3rd through MTS, as well as MegaFon and Vimpelcom. Carriers with multinational reach have tended to expand iPhone distribution without much effort; notable examples include Orange, Vodafone and TeliaSonera.

Apple has set a goal of shipping the iPhone to at least 70 countries this year, and the Ukraine may mark the 50th so far.

    Common mistake

It's a pretty common mistake but the correct way to say it is simply 'Ukraine' not 'The Ukraine.' It's like saying 'The Poland' or 'The Sweden.'

Glad to see that Ukraine is being mentioned in headlines. Hopefully EU membership isn't far off.

Man, I hate it when people just steal apple's ideas. First it was HTC, then RIM. Now Ukranie not only has an iPhone killer, but apparently they aren't even kidding anymore, just stealing the iPhone and selling it as their own.

    What's next? Verizon iPhone?

Ladies and gentlemen, it's JUNE 10, 2009 outside and.....? What direction should I go to get to a local store to buy iPhone? Or take a plan and fly to Poland/Russian? (better Poland :-) ) If my vision of reality is still accurate I can't see Ukraine on this list -
