Ink-free Dell portable printer spotted at FCC

updated 04:35 pm EDT, Mon September 29, 2008

Dell ultra-small printer

A recent FCC filing indicates Dell will soon launch a tiny portable printer that does not rely on ink to produce images, instead utilizing ZINK media. A USB port and PictBridge software support allows users to hook up digital cameras directly to the printer, while Bluetooth-enabled devices such as cellphones and computers can send photos to the printer, allowing for the quick creation of prints.

According to the owner's manual included in the FCC filing, the PZ310 will ship with a package that contains a dozen 2- by 3-inch ZINK Photo Papers and one Smart Sheet. A Reprint button allows users to produce multiple copies of the images though Dell warns it needs to stop after about four prints to cool down. ZINK photo paper relies on heat generated by the printer to bring out various colors. The battery-operated PZ310 can also be plugged into an electrical outlet to facilitate charging its battery.

The PZ310 is ultra portable, sized at approximately 4.7 inches long and about 2.8 inches wide. No specific pricing or launch information is known about the PZ310 Wasabi.
