iPhone out in South Africa
The iPhone 3G is now officially on sale in South Africa. As announced, the phone is being carried there through Vodacom (Vodafone), which is selling 8 and 16GB phones at prices starting from R1,799 and R2,899, respectively. These prices apply only to the iPhone 500S package however, and increase if people choose a cheaper contract option. All contracts last two years.
The 500S plan costs R925 per month, and grants users 500 minutes of talk time. The 240 plan (R595) scales down to 240 minutes, and the 120S option (R450) is of course limited to 120 minutes. All contracts include 100 texts and just 250MB of data, with an overage rate of R1.50 per megabyte.
iPhones are said to be unlocked in the region, but a prepaid phone costs R6,389 for 8GB, and R7,569 for 16GB.

This is extremely expensive. I live in South Africa, and compared to blackberry and HTC pricepoints, this is really not well priced.
USD equiv would be: $800 for 8Gig w*** contract and $950 16Gig
"Cheap contract" = $55 per month, with 120 mins and 100 text messages and 250! MB of data. Then Handset is $275 (8) and 412 (16). On top of that, we pay about $0.20 per minute following the initial 120 mins.
So - all in all, really expensive, and this in a country where the GDP per capita is about $5000.
Apple should have squeezed the opportunistic and ridiculous cell phone boys club here.
Alas - I'll probably pay up as my HTC touch has nearly gotten me into car accidents as I try to make a phonecall with the stylus whilst driving!! (Win Mobile is REALLY bad)
