NVIDIA teams with MotionDSP to boost video

updated 11:40 am EDT, Thu September 25, 2008

NVIDIA, MotionDSP team up

NVIDIA on Thursday announced it has partnered up with digital video software creator MotionDSP to provide users with a way to enhance the quality of personal videos created by their cellphone cameras, point-and-shoot digicams, camcorders or video captured from the Internet. Written using NVIDIA's CUDA general-purpose computing technology to take advantage of the GPUs' abiilities to handle non-graphics tasks, MotionDSP's codenamed Carmel software tracks every pixel from tens of video frames before reconstructing high-quality video from low-res sources.

The software can reduce compression and sensor noise while improving resolution and correcting the effects of low lighting conditions. With Carmel, users will be able to smooth out choppy videos with frame-rate interpolation, stabilize and smooth motion, restore dark videos and perform other tasks to improve the way their videos look in real time.

MotionDSP's Carmel software is due for a launch in the first quarter of 2009, although pricing information has not been announced and the product may receive a different name. Operating system support hasn't been outlined so far beyond Windows.
