Panasonic shows off high-def plasma 3D system

updated 04:35 pm EDT, Wed September 24, 2008

Panasonic 3D HD plasma

At the opening of the CEATEC show in Japan, Panasonic held demonstrations of its 3D HD system built around its 103-inch plasma display. The setup also relied on a standard Blu-ray disc player and battery-powered 3D glasses to produce three-dimensional moving images. Panasonic claims this is the first system using a plasma display and producing true-to-life 3D images, which, the company says, are on par in terms of image quality with Hollywood-produced 3D movies.

Compared to previous 3D systems, Panasonic says it reduced image degradation from pixel skipping and scanning lines present in vertical resolution, thereby allowing it to use twice as much HD information into the signal. The system sends infrared signals to the glasses, which synchronizes the LCD shutter in the glasses with the signal the TV is sending. Two 1080i streams are sent to each eye.

At the demonstration, Panasonic also announced it will push Hollywood and movie studios to help it standardize the 3D content on Blu-ray discs, possibly offering a standard HD version on a separate disc.

Panasonic has not announced when or if the system will be commercially available, or what it would cost. [via Impress]
