Toshiba intros netbook

Toshiba UK on Thursday announced that its first netbook entry, the NB100, will arrive on the UK market next month. The device will be built around an 8.9-inch, 1024x600 LCD display, with processing power coming courtesy of Intel's 1.6GHz Atom chip. Virtual memory will top out at 1GB, while onboard storage comes by way of a 120GB hard disk. The device will be available with either Linux Ubuntu 8.04 using OpenOffice 2.4 or else Microsoft's Windows XP Home.

The netbook will include 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi as well as an Ethernet port. Three USB ports will be able to charge connected USB devices even when the netbook is in sleep mode thanks to Toshiba's software. A 0.3-megapixel webcam is similarly part of the spec sheet. Toshiba says the NB100 will tip the scales at less than 2.2lbs.

Roughly two weeks earlier, a related report had the nearly identical NB105 launching in Mexico in November.

The NB100 will be available in the UK in black, gold or silver colors as of this October, priced at the equivalent of about $470 (260). The company hasn't announced plans for a North American launch. [via Pocket-Lint]
