On2 releases VP8 video compression format

updated 11:40 pm EDT, Mon September 15, 2008

On2 VP8 compression

On2 Technologies today announced its latest video compression format, VP8, claimed to deliver the same quality as H.264 but with up to 50 percent less data and fewer processor cycles. Golden frames, processor-adaptive realtime encoding, and a low-complexity loop filter all contribute to the performance gains. Potential uses of VP8 include web TV, IPTV, video conferencing, or streaming HD movies.

VP8 is designed to encode in realtime on slower machines, and put less load on the processor while decoding, making the format suitable for mobile devices, claims On2. The structure will also take full advantage of multi-core processor capabilities, efficiently using up to 64 to increase compression speed or improve real-time video quality.
