Apple has increased its market share as a home notebook PC, now fourth in ranking, according to a MetaFacts report. It has also become a more popular choice higher income, younger, and more highly-educated users. The self-employed are also increasingly turning to Macs as their next PC. For households with a second or third computer, Apple holds 8 percent of the market.
The market research firm found that 21 percent of Macs are used in public places, compared to 12 percent of Windows PCs. Consumers use the two products differently, with web content creation, graphics, and personal activities being the focus for Apple products.
One of the most revealing details about Apple customers is their brand loyalty- 81 percent of households using primarily using Macs intend to buy another for their next purchase. Workplace surveys showed teachers, artists/designers/performers, management, clerical, and consultants to account for the most Mac use.
MetaData cited the iPod as a contributing factor to the marketing of the PCs, with the media players filtering into homes that are open to new purchases. Many "non-Apple" households shopping at Apple retail stores may more children, another contributing factor to the strengthening of the brand.
