Sony ships VAIO dock with USB video

updated 02:20 pm EDT, Mon September 8, 2008

Sony VAIO USB Dock Station

Sony uncharacteristically chose Monday to slip word that it has started shipping the VAIO USB Docking Station, the company's first notebook dock with USB video support. The brick-shaped adapter borrows DisplayLink's technology to give certain VAIO notebooks support for an external DVI or VGA display up to 1600x1200 without using a second cable just for video or for those who already have a second display.

The station also brings four USB ports as well as full audio in/out and Ethernet connections at the same time, reducing the need again for more than the lone USB link to the PC itself.

Sony is specific regarding requirements and notes that the VAIO AR, CR, FW, FZ and NR currently support the dock and that they all require Windows to run. The company prices the USB Docking Station at $200.
