AT&T resolves iPhone data issues on east coast [u]

updated 12:35 pm EDT, Wed September 3, 2008

iPhone data outages

(Updated with new AT&T information) iPhone owners on the east coast of the US are experiencing severe problems with AT&T's network, according to scattered accounts. In some areas customers are complaining of a complete lack of cellular data functions, including e-mail and web browsing, over either EDGE or HSDPA (3G). The problems appear to be widespread, affecting areas like New York, Missouri, Massachusetts and North Carolina, and typified by phones misreporting excellent coverage.

The issue also appears not to be exclusive to iPhones, affecting other devices such as BlackBerries and N95s. AT&T spokesman Brad Mays says that the carrier is "aware of the reports" and looking into the situation, but one New York City customer has been told that data may be out until 9PM Eastern. In the meantime, some customers suggest it is possible to obtain credit from AT&T as compensation.

Update: AT&T claims that the outage should now be fully resolved. "There was a routing issue affecting some wireless data use in the Northeast region," says a representative. "AT&T technicians determined the cause and restored service at 11:56AM EDT. Voice calling, text messaging and BlackBerry e-mail were unaffected."

    similar in Las Vegas

I was in Las Vegas this weekend and experienced similar issues. I would have 5 bars of 3G but couldn't make a call. Just constant call failed. It would also randomly change from 5 bars of 3G to 5 bars of EDGE and then say No Service in the middle of the las vegas strip! After 5 minutes it would find service again.

    Count me in..

Central NJ. Phone almost always shows full bars of 3G, but I get no data unless I am on a wireless network.

Have tried resetting the phone, etc.. and have even exchanged it, but still have the same problems (its been going on for about 2 weeks now). I hope whoever needs to, gets their act together and fixes this!

    4 more years

Just think, in four years, AT&T might not be the exclusive provider in the US.

In Boston here. Having trouble checking my email.

It is working fine for me. I have not had any of the 3G issues either (dropped calls etc.) No problems here.

    fixed:deleted Seismograph

I tried everything, visited AT&T ("aware of problem"), then deleted Seismograph. Presto, everything works again. Could be a coincidence...

    AT&T is really bad.

During recent conversations with my boss, I remarked that his connectivity was so bad that he must have AT&T. He shrugged and replied "yes". I told him that even though I'm supplied with a Blackberry (AT&T), I choose to use my Verizon because - wait for it - it just WORKS. I wish Apple would get on the stick and get a cellular supplier who had actual RF engineers working for them.
