Sprint Slips Xohm Details

Sprint has already slipped details of what its WiMAX-based Xohm wireless service will feature when it launches later this month, a set of hidden pages show. The company'S device list and FAQs show the firm will have just the N810 WiMAX Edition as its stand-alone device and will primarily rely on PC adapters, including a ZyXEL router as well as a Samsung ExpressCard modem and a ZTE USB modem. Notebooks with WiMAX built-in will also support the service and are known to include an ASUS Eee PC variant and new Toshiba notebooks.

Mac support is called into dispute through the leak; although the official Xohm portal will support OS X, a connection utility supplied separately will only support Windows. The company nonetheless mentions support for the Mac in its online documents.

Sprint also explains in further information pages that Xohm will match promises of a more open service made earlier in its history. Unlike cellular plans, customers won't be encouraged to sign contracts and will have the option of paying by the month or by day for short trips; those who need both a permanent modem at home and an adapter for travel will have the option of using both for an extra fee.

Speeds in real-world conditions should outpace 3G at about two to four megabits per second for downloads, Sprint adds.

A specific launch date isn't yet revealed on the website but should start with service in Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington, DC. The company has already revealed its early expansion plans and plans to focus on New England with Boston, Philadelphia, and Providence launches in the near future in addition to Dallas.
