Canon intros new SX-, A-series PowerShots

updated 09:10 am EDT, Tue August 26, 2008

Canon A and SX PowerShots

Along its professional-level EOS 50D, Canon has debuted three new PowerShot compact cameras. Foremost in the group is the SX110 IS, which has a 10x optical zoom lens, and a three-inch viewing LCD. Like the other new cameras it is bolstered by optical image stabilization, as a well as a DIGIC III image processor, which sports face and motion detection as well as automatic red-eye correction. Power comes from two AA batteries.

Whereas the SX110 is rated at nine megapixels, however, both the A1000 IS and A2000 IS are rated at 10. In exchange the A1000 scales back to 4x optical zoom, and a 2.5-inch LCD; the A2000 bridges the gap with 6x zoom and a three-inch LCD. The A-series cameras are due in September for $200 and $250, respectively, while the SX110 IS is expected by the end of this month for $300.

    Love the 10X optical

I hope the update to the G9 brings with it that 10X optical from the SX110 IS. I find the G9 to be a great pocket sized camera when I don't want to lug around my DSLR. I'm really impressed with how much Canon can pack into such an affordable camera.

The A650IS and A630 before it were awesome cameras. Perfect point

The A650IS and A630 before it were awesome cameras. Perfect point & shoot pocket cameras for experienced photographers. The new A series cameras are nothing in comparison. Manual exposure control? Gone. Aperture Priority? Gone. Shutter Priority? Gone. White Balance control? Gone. Very sad.

I've been an extremely loyal Canon buyer since 1983. Given the new A-series models, it's time to see what the competition has to offer. Canon is settling for mediocre.
