Sony unveils PSP with built-in mic, new LCD [U]

updated 11:45 am EDT, Wed August 20, 2008

Sony PSP 3000

(Updated with US info) Sony today used the Leipzig Games Convention as the venue for revealing its third revision of the PlayStation Portable. Known internally as the PSP 3000, the gaming handheld now has a built-in mic for VoIP calls (eliminating the need for the Skype PSP headset) as well as in-game chat and any other software that needs voice recording. A new LCD is also present and improves both the color range as well as the contrast over the original version of the 4.3-inch display.

Extra changes are minor and include a redesigned home button to remain consistent with the same button on the PS3's gamepads. The device is otherwise identical to the PSP 2000 and has both more memory than the original as well as a slimmer, lighter design.

European launch information has been announced so far at the Germany-based expo. The continent should receive the updated PSP on October 15th for 199 Euros ($294) and will sell it only in bundles, packing it with either games like FIFA 09 or the Go! communications pack. Existing PSPs will sell for 170 Euros ($251) until stock runs out.

In the US, the PSP will appear as part of the Ratched & Clank bundle on October 14th, which will sell for $200 with its namesake game, National Treasure 2 on UMD, a coupon for echochrome, and a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. Sony also plans a 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack at the same price which replaces the software with a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo and a coupon for Everyday Shooter. It and a $170 no-frills Core Pack will ship in November.
