Apple opens Carlsbad store; third London location?

updated 10:10 am EDT, Mon August 18, 2008

Carlsbad, London stores

Two new Apple Stores opened this weekend, say reports. In addition to one in Altamonte Springs, Florida, another location opened its doors in Carlsbad, California. The Carlsbad store can be found within The Forum at 1923 Calle Barcelona, and is next to Z Gallerie and across from Anthropologie. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10AM to 9PM, and on Sunday operates from noon to 6PM. No workshops have been scheduled so far.

In the UK, meanwhile, Apple is said to be planning a third store for London, following ones at Regent Street and Brent Cross. The store should be situated in the Covent Garden district of London, on the corner of James Street and The Piazza. The district is said to be particularly prestigious, as it is home to buildings like the Royal Opera House and the Covent Garden Market; Apple's building was originally constructed in 1876, and has been labeled a protected heritage structure.

It is uncertain when Apple might open the store, but it could happen as late as 2010, and early plans show a three-story shop with a spiral glass staircase, accompanied by a fourth floor to be used only for 70 administrative workers.

    Carlsbad

I have absolutely no idea why Apple chose the Forum at Carlsbad to open another Apple store in the San Diego area. It's a strip mall and there are far better options in San Diego. A gaslamp location in downtown San Diego would have been more useful than some obscure strip mall. I visited this location for the first and last time on Saturday.
