Seagate FreeAgent leaks

An image and very limited information has leaked on Seagate's next-generation of FreeAgent external hard disk drives, according to a report from Engadget. The information is not official, but sources believe the larger pictured HDD is a replacement for the FreeAgent-series Desktop drive, with the smaller unit either complementing or also replacing the FreeAgent Go drive.

What little specifics the report does include has to do with the available colors, with brown dropped in favor of grey, black and silver hues when the drives launch, while at least red, green, gold and pink will join the range later on in the product cycle. The drives will purportedly feature 5,400RPM speeds for notebook drives before speeding up to 7,200RPM for desktop models.

In a break from tradition, Seagate will ship at least one of the drives ready to be used by Mac users out of the box, forcing Windows users to format it accordingly.

The official announcement from Seagate is expected in September, with prices similar to the current FreeAgent Go 250GB's $110 and Desktop 1TB's $190.

    Force windows users

Good heavens above, forcing windows users to reformat hard drives. I would have thought they had plenty of practice doing this reinstalling Windows (I know I have done it a bunch of times on my dual boot Mac Pro 2.8 GHz!)
