Nokia pushing AMOLED displays in new phones?

updated 10:30 am EDT, Wed August 13, 2008

Nokia Requiring AMOLED

Alleged display industry insiders today claim Nokia will make a large shift to active matrix OLED (AMOLED) displays in the near future. The cellphone designer is said to be choosing suppliers it knows have plans to create and manufacture the advanced organic screens, which are brighter and more color-rich than LCDs as well as thinner and more power-efficient.

Two of the Taiwan area's larger firms, AU Optronics and TPO Display, are already said to be gearing up their AMOLED plans and already make displays for Nokia's phones, though others are reportedly under consideration. The Finnish company is using AMOLED plans as a "test" to gauge whether it can rely on these manufacturers for its upcoming plans, according to the claims.

When Nokia would plan to use AMOLED is unknown, though multiple partners plan to ramp up production sometime in 2009. The technology is seen as likely for many manufacturers and is said by analysts as a possibility for iPhones and other touchscreen devices, as it would still allow the same input but result in a slimmer device without the need for a backlight.
