Mac sales up down under

New figures show a sharp increase in Apple's market share in Australia over the past year, according to ZDNet Australia. Two analyst firms, Gartner and IDC, came up with different figures, but both showed a dramatic increase in Mac Sales. Garner says Apple's market share in the second quarter of 2008 was 5.3-percent -- up from 3.8-percemt in the same period of 2007. IDC says Apple's Market share hit at 6.2 percent during the first quarter.

Gartner reportedly puts Apple's year-over-year growth at 52-percent, while the overall PC market grew just 9-percent in Australia. Gartner calculates that Apple sold roughly 20,000 more machines in the second quarter than it had in 2007.

The increase puts Apple within striking distance of some of its major PC competitors including Toshiba and Lenovo, each holding 8-percent of the Australian market. Hewlett Packard remains in the number one spot with 21-percent, followed by Dell at 15-percent and Acer at 13-percent.
