T-Mobile makes Las Vegas second with 3G

updated 08:45 am EDT, Wed August 6, 2008

T-Mobile 3G in Las Vegas

T-Mobile this morning revealed Las Vegas as the second city to receive its fledgling 3G service following New York City. The upgrade mirrors that of the inaugural launch and sees the desert city get 1,700MHz UMTS access both for clearer calls and for faster data when used with a phone that supports the extra performance, such as the Nokia 6263. Moving to 3G also increases the number of customers the network can handle at once, T-Mobile says.

The provider continues to promise that it will add "at least" 20 more coverage areas to its 3G network before the end of the year.

Additionally, T-Mobile now hints that it will soon introduce its first HSDPA-capable device and matching network, which will give the company speed more comparable to AT&T. Several more "all-in-one" devices will also be available soon that take advantage of the network, according to the company, though it doesn't mention whether these will explicitly use either UMTS or HSDPA for 3G data. The Google Android-based HTC Dream is widely speculated to be one of these devices and may be the HSDPA-capable device.
