Apple Store set to open in Monterey, CA

Apple is set to open another retail store in California, this time in Monterey. The new store is located in the Del Monte Shopping Center which recently received a $20 million renovation. The grand opening is set for August 9th which coincides with the opening of the new Chatswood Chase store in Australia, the second in the country. This will be the first official Apple Store in the Monterey area and the 39th in all of California.

The store will feature all of the typical services including a full Genius Bar, One to One training, personal shopping, workshops and youth programs.

The new store bolsters Apple's retail growth story, despite an admitted economic slump. Sales of Macs have continued to grow an are reportedly up 44 percent from last year.

While living in Monterey, CA and attending the Defense Language Institute, I thought it was absurd that the closest Apple Store was in San Francisco. There are so many opportunities to sell their wares to the upscale residents of Monterey and the scores of DLI, International Institute and CSUMB students who live there.

Actually, San Jose's Valley Fair would have been closer, Stanford's store, or even the corporate store open to the public in Cupertino.

However, I understand your point. Realize though that the retail stores did target the larger cities first and are only more recently hitting the smaller suburbs. The Monterey Peninsula is not exactly a sprawling area; combined between Salinas, Carmel, PG, Monterey, Seaside, and Marina, you still have less people than Sacramento, which was also a later city to get a store.

There is an authorized reseller and repair center in Seaside and has been for over 20 years called Monterey Bay Computer Works. Much better to shop local for the same price IMO.
