Nokia said slashing media phone prices

Nokia Cuts Phone Prices

Nokia has been cutting the prices of its media phones in a bid to stay competitive with rivals, according to sources speaking to Reuters. The news organization points to industry and market research leads which say that Finland-based Nokia is dropping prices across much of its lineup but is making the most substantial cuts to music- and video-friendly phones, including the N81 8GB smartphone as well as mid-range devices like the 5310 and 5610 XpressMusic. These devices will allegedly see price reductions as steep as 10 percent.

Explanations for the reasons behind the cuts aren't given, though the cuts are taking place shortly after the launch of the iPhone 3G, which primarily cuts into sales of the N81 8GB. The price cuts are also likely to affect competitors with similar media-centric devices in Europe, including the Viewty from LG as well as Sony Ericsson's Walkman line.

Nokia has already launched more substantial cuts in some territories, halving the N95 8GB price in Canada less than a week after its Apple opponent reached stores.

The company says it won't comment on the price reductions, though a spokesman says there would "be no end" if Nokia were to respond to each price cut it made.

    no price cut at Rogers

Rogers didn't cut the price on the N95. It's $690 on a no-contract basis. Meanwhile, you can buy it from amazon.com (if you have a US shipping address) for just $575. Way to go Rogers, still s******* your customers, eh?
