Red iPhone in development for holidays?

Apple may be planning to add red to the stable of iPhone 3G colors by the end of the year, rumors suggest. An article cites an "unconfirmed source" as saying that the color should arrive in time for the Christmas season, as a means of generating a spike in sales. The color would also fall under the aegis of the Product (RED) campaign, which donates a small portion of every sale towards HIV and AIDS victims in Africa.

Apple has been a participant in the Product (RED) campaign since 2006, when it debuted a red version of the second-generation iPod nano. The company now also sells red Shuffles, in addition to third-generation Nanos. The rumors of a red iPhone may be backed up by reports from before the 3G launch, which correctly surmised the existence of black and white iPhone backs, while also making references to a red one.

It's great that they're working on new phones, but they should concentrate a little more on getting the current phones out the door. I've waited a week now, sans iPhone, so hearing about a new model coming out just irks me. Oh well.

"In Development" makes it sound like some huge undertaking.. Isn't it just a matter of, "Hey Timmy, let's change the color of the plastic to Red -40" or something?

:-)

This could go over HUGE in China btw, if it's sold there..

So I assume next will be the usual U2 special edition iPhone. Complete with GPS for your ego trip.

Would have been the

perfect color to go along with the Soviet flag. iPhone 3G soon nicknamed as the Red Menace in Russia.

The Chinese will certainly love it. They can stick one large yellow star and four little yellow stars on the back of their iPhones to represent the Chinese flag. Sweet. Definitely will be a hot seller in mainland China.

and Apple will probably make this an Apple exclusive like the Product (RED) iPods and not allow AT&T stores to sell them.
