Customizable internet radio for the iPhone

updated 11:40 am EDT, Sat July 12, 2008

pandora app

Pandora has released a version of its popular internet service for the iPhone. The new app brings users CD-quality tracks in the form of a personalized radio station. A user must simply enter the name of an artist, song or composer and then within seconds Pandora will build a "station" that plays the music the user entered along with music that is similar in style. With each song users are also given the option of tagging the song with a thumbs up or down to further fine tune and customize the created station. The iPhone app also supplies users with a link to buy any song that is being listened to in the iTunes WiFi store.

The Pandora internet radio app can be found in the App Store on the iPhone or through iTunes but is currently only available in select countries depending on the host countries music-licensing restraints.

    CD-quality? no, but...

I love Pandora--their product is excellent and their customer service is superb--and I'm very excited about the new iPhone app. But they don't deliver CD-quality music, unless you listen to some very cut-rate CDs. 64kbps AAC is quite listenable, but noticeably compressed.

    Yes.

This is exactly what I thought iTunes should have as its "radio" functionality anyway. This would end any competition with subscription services because the music doesn't have to sit on the harddrive and take up space.

Also if I think of it as a radio signal, 64kbps AAC, will be just fine while on the road. I can keep my higher bit stuff on my 80Gig iPod that is connected to the hifi.

    Re: Yes

Until you start complaining about the ads you have to listen to. Or you could pay for the service (oh, wait, that becomes a subscription...)
