iPod touch 2.0 upgrade
With users finding ways to upgrade their original iPhones to iPhone 2.0 yesterday, Apple today began touting its iPod touch v2.0 software; although the iTunes Store was off-line, users can purchase the upgrade for their Touch for $9.95. The software update brings push email with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, contact search, multiple calendars, a scientific calculator, improved Mail attachment viewing, better email management (including bcc for emails), and user-selectable accounts for replying to email as well as updated language, dictionary, and keyboard support (English, French, German, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, and Polish).

It's got a scientific calendar? Awesome! What does it do that a regular calendar doesn't? ;-)

Apple not ready

I'm actually very disappointed in Apple's inability to have MobileMe online this morning. I just went to it, and there's only a big MobileMe is Temporarily Unavailable message.
On top of that, I've been restarting iTunes and reconnecting my iPhone all morning, and still there is no 2.0 firmware update available.
Really sloppy Apple - plain SLOPPY :( Not a good sign.

Dvorak keyboard support

I wonder whether Apple has added Dvorak keyboard support for the iPod Touch with this release. That would be nice for all nine of the people that use Dvorak.
My iTunes detects that the update is available, but reports that the iTunes store is "temporarily unavailable." I imagine that there are a lot of people hammering the servers. I'll try again later.

update availability shaky

Ihad the same problem as Flesh-faced Recruit, and I unplugged and plugged my iPod back into the computer, and when I asked iTunes to check again, it said that 1.1.4 was the most current firmware. What's up with that?
I guess I can be patient...

Now 1.1.4 is most current
07/11, 09:53am reply
Heh. Now my iTunes is reporting that 1.1.4 is the most current. It's flipped back and forth between 1.1.4 and 2.0 a couple of times now. I suspect that Apple has been changing the "most recent firmware" setting because they are having a problem somewhere.
Whether that's a problem with the firmware or the download servers remains to be seen.

Apple is human

I guess I should relax and just accept the fact that Apple is prone to the same technical goofs and sloppiness that I've come to expect as standard for Microsoft.

Well, yeah, cblackmo. You're right, and I am not being a troll here, but it is not a trivial task to release a major upgrade like like MobileMe or the iPhone and iPod Touch upgrades without any problems whatsoever. There must be hundreds of thousands of people trying to update their kit.
It's partly a human thing (I can't remember the last time I wrote an e-mail and didn't need to correct anything) and it's partly that the systems behind the scenes are mind-bogglingly complicated and sophisticated.
Microsoft's problems seem to be amplified tenfold perhaps because their systems are not only complicated and sophisticated, but also convoluted. But hey, that works for them.
When I want to use a new release on the first day, I expect there to be problems. That's why they call it the bleeding edge.
That said, I'm really looking forward to these problems being sorted out. I'm with you, cblackmo.

Apparently Apple isn't offering (at least not yet, but I can't find mention anywhere that says otherwise) 2.0 software for free for new ipod touch buyers (as in "Buying it next week") I thought the only reason they charged existing owners is because they HAD to (accounting rules) because it adds features that you didn't have before. But all they'd have to do is change the advertising and everything would be kosher for new buyers (in fact, it would've been kosher if they just said "Buy it after WWDC, get the update when it comes out").
h***, when they added those 'new' (as in "sure, we had them on the iphone, but intentionally left them off the touch only to add them later and charge $20 for them), they dropped the price of existing touches and included them on the new ones.
