PlayStation 3 40GB to be replaced in August?

PS3 40GB May Exit in Aug

Sony could be replacing its baseline 40GB PlayStation 3 model with a new version as early as next month, according to a Wal-Mart data sheet obtained by Joystiq. The large retailer lists the Blu-ray game console as being replaced with a new version in early August but doesn't provide the new model or illustrate exact changes. Sony has yet to update the 40GB system with the Dual Shock 3 rumble controller or release an anticipated white PS3.

However, the refresh would take place just two weeks after the E3 gaming expo starts on Monday and would follow just as Microsoft is expected to release a 60GB Xbox 360 Pro, lending support to suggestions that Sony will swap in a new version with additional hard drive space or extra features.

The news also likely rules out a once-rumored price cut for the PS3 to $299, which would potentially prove difficult with the relatively high prices of the Blu-ray drive, Cell processor, and RSX Graphics chip in the game system.
