O2 UK launches iPhone 3G pre-order service

iPhone 3G pre-order by O2

Current UK iPhone users with the O2 carrier, on Monday received news that they can pre-order the new iPhone 3G starting 8AM Monday morning. New phones will be delivered directly to customers by courier on Friday the 11th July, coinciding with the iPhone 3G launch. There is no upgrade fee for the iPhone 3G 8GB version for customers contracted to the £45 and £75 monthly tariffs, and a £99 charge for users of the £35 and £30 tariffs. For users wanting the 16GB version of the device, it is free with the £75 tariff, £59 with the £45 per month tariff, and priced at £159 on the £30 and £35 tariffs. O2 notes that these prices only apply to existing customers, and expire on the 11th of July when the iPhone is officially launched to the public.

Huge public demand, in conjunction with rumored tight iPhone 3G availability, has forced stores to limit the iPhone 3G to one per customer for the Friday launch. As with the first iPhone release, there is no guarantee iPhone 3G availability will meet demand.

    O2 iPhone3G hassle

Visiting the O2 iPhone3G upgrade site this morning has been a nightmare! After receiving my notification by SMS this morning I have been attempting to use the site repeatedly since 8.30 am. Only after the first hour was I directed to a page which indicated that I would receive an update code by SMS. I have entered my details multiple times and nothing has happened. I have received 3 updates codes by SMS; the first two I was unable to use because the field to enter the code into is not revealed in Safari (!), it was only clear what to do when I switched to Firefox! But with either browser the process would not complete, repeatedly returning to the page where I should enter my address and credit card number again. And again. On calling customer support, the operator could only say that I wasn't to worry because everyone was having the same problem! She suggested I try again in 3 - 4 hours. As usual, there was no one there to talk to who knew any more. Am I surprised? No really. Am I concerned? Well I would like to know where my credit card details ended up ... wish me luck in a few hours time as I brave the site again.

    O2 website not working

You're not alone, mate. Same problem here. I've been trying all morning. I know there's supposed to be "huge" demand, but is it really so much to ask to have a webserver that can serve a couple thousand hits? Here's hoping my 16GB arrives in white! :)

    Terrible website

I managed to submit my order on their "failover" order page (the simple HTML form)... It said the order went through, but immediately after i refreshed the page it said that they're out of stock. I'm quite doubtful that I'll get my iPhone.

    Same here

I can't believe that the demand is as great as the trouble I'm having suggests.

I reckon it's a conspiracy to get the iPhone on the news as "Wow! if you're not looking for one of these, there's something wrong with you! Everyone else is!"

I may just wait until the local O2 shop opens on Friday - there can't be that many wannabe users in this part of South Wales (that translates as I'm the only saddo in the village ;-)
