Google Talk for iPhone

Google has announced the debut of a new version of Google Talk, its instant messaging program, now designed for the iPhone and iPod touch. The web application is said to be virtually unchanged in its new incarnation, but its graphic arrangement has been formatted to match the look and feel of other software on the iPhone. Google already offers a number of iPhone apps such as Gmail and Reader.

Google does note two deficiencies for the iPhone version of Talk: it must first be opened through Safari, so owners of 2.5G iPhones cannot chat and take phone calls simultaneously. The second is that whenever users switch away to another application or browser window, Talk will automatically switch status to "unavailable."

    It seems SMS in moot

With AOL IM & Google Talk--and probably MSN Messenger & Yahoo! Chat not far behind, texting is covered, right? No wonder it was separated from the unlimited plan.

I guess if the only people you even need to text to are using iphones or at their computers, you're right!

And it wasn't 'separated' from the unlimited plan. AT&T offers SMS separately from data for all their phones. They standardized their pricing, that's all.

Google talk works across iChat, though only Mac to Mac. for video and audio.
