iPhone 3G launch at 8AM?

iPhone 3G at 8AM

A purportedly leaked memo supplied today to BGR suggests that the launch of the iPhone 3G at AT&T stores on July 11th will take place in the morning rather than Apple's recent preference for evening launches. Store managers are said to be expecting an 8AM launch rather than the 6PM launch for the original launch as well as some of the company's recent retail openings and its Leopard introduction.

It's unknown whether this time would apply to all of the US or the rest of world, or would change so that all regions are live at once.

The report is unconfirmed but may tie closely into the activation method for new iPhones, which must be activated in stores rather than at home and take between 10 to 15 minutes to be ready for use. The added time is widely understood to result in longer lineups and in an evening launch could potentially block customers at the back of the line from buying the phone before stores close.

    100th in line

So if I'm the 100th person in line, and it takes 15min for each person, and there are 5 people activating....that's 6 hours in line.

And it's no bigger than the one I have now?

    Sounds Nice

This sounds good to me. I'm an early riser so I'd much rather wait in line from 4am to 8am, instead of 2pm to 6pm.

Plus, here in Vegas, if you wait from 2pm to 6pm outside then the first call you'll make on your iPhone is 9-1-1 for dehydration.

    Just wait!

Just wait a few days and buy when the rush is gone!
It is only a phone and not much different from the one we have right now.

    Lines?

There may be lines at some stores, but I am not expecting to see any massive 100 person lines. This is an upgrade not a new product launch.

    Decision made for me

The iPhone 3G launch coincides with a trip to attend my nephew's wedding, so not only would my wife kill me if I waited in line but I don't want to have to lug everything back home.

    NO LINES METHOD

    iPhone 3G launch at 8AM?

In Store Activation might be SILLY, and UNHELPFULL... I know APPLE wants to stop people buying it to UNLOCK for domestic or international usage

I wonder if the following method would be better:

CHARGE FULL PRICE, PLUS $200-300 PREMIUM with 30 days RETURN/CREDIT OPTION!

Customer would have to ACTIVATE the Phone within 30 days to get the $200-300 PREMIUM Credit back. If Customer Cancels within 30 Days from Activation, he/she would have to return the iPhone to Apple or ATT, wherever they bought it to get $$ back, minus Restocking...

All that would cut out the UNLOCKERS, if the PRICE-PREMIUM is set HIGH ENOUGH to be a DETERENT! But the GOOD GUYS won't have to wait in lines, and do it easily from home, with a nice Customer Rep on the phone, if need be, instead of a ZOO at the stores!

But, then again, I am sure Apple has thought of all this... We'll see!
