NXP intros 4G mobile modem

NXP Semiconductors today announced it's set to launch the world's first 4G mobile modem, called the Nexperia Cellular System Solution PNX6910. The modem uses soft architecture to achieve claimed download speeds of 150Mbps and 50Mbps upload speeds. When it launches, it will be capable of supporting the LTE, HSPA, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS and GSM networks in mobile data devices, says NXP.

The modem will be made up of NXP's Embedded Vector Processor and a powerful Digital Signal Processing core, designed in parallel. The design combines one RF chip and one baseband chip for a small footprint and multi-mode functionality. NXP hopes to see the new modem utilized in devices other than cell phones, including digital cameras and camcorders, laptops, internet tablets and UMPCs.

Consumers won't see the chip until well into 2009, as the 4G network (also known as Long Term Evolution, or LTE) isn't due to launch until the second quarter of next year.
