InFocus launches projectors with USB video

InFocus IN1100 and IN3100

InFocus started Wednesday by introducing two Work Big DLP projectors that are the first projectors anywhere to use DisplayLink's USB video technology. The portable IN1100 series and the larger-sized IN3100 series can both use USB for video output. The approach lets users relay video from a notebook even when the computer lacks a free traditional output of its own or is missing a video cable. It also allows a connection to two or more external displays at the same time.

The IN1100 line is the most compact and weighs just under 2.8 pounds but still provides 2,200 lumens of brightness and an 1,800:1 contrast ratio. Besides USB, native input is provided through VGA, S-video, and RCA. The bulkier IN3100 units boost the brightness to between 3,000 and 3,500 lumens depending on the model, with contrast also increasing to 2,000:1; the extra space also allows for HDMI input and a second VGA connector.

The IN1100, IN3102, and IN3104 all operate at a native 1024x768, while the IN1102 and IN3106 both run at a 1280x800 widescreen mode. All models can still accept either up to 1600x1200 resolutions from computers or up to 1080i HD.

InFocus prices the two IN1100 models at $1,299 and $1,399 respectively, while the IN3100 line ranges from $1,499 to $1,799. The IN3100 models appear first in July, while the more totable models arrive in August. A third projector series, the IN5100, also launches in July but is targeted at fixed installations with HDMI 1.3 and BNC video support, RS232 automation, and a $3,499 price point.
