Joy Division Zune confirmed, given new launch date

updated 03:45 pm EDT, Wed June 4, 2008

Joy Division Zune Official

Microsoft today confirmed the Joy Division Zune, one of the few special-run editions of the second-generation music player. The finished device almost exactly matches past claims and customizes the Zune 80 in tribute to a new documentary of the rock group. Both the software and the player's back show the artwork of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album, while a copy of the Peter Saville-made documentary (also titled Joy Division) is preloaded on the device.

The device will command a premium from Microsoft and will sell through Zune Originals for $400 versus the $249 of the ordinary Zune 80. Only 500 will be available when the player goes on sale as of June 17th. Microsoft suggests the player will only be available in the US despite the Canadian Zune launch six days earlier.

    No kanji support

I like the Zune (shoot me now), but MS ABSOLUTE REFUSAL to support East Asian fonts is a total NO GO for me. I ended up buying the iPod touch because MS was too short-sighted.

    Goths with money???!??

I love Joy Division/New Order, but for $400 I could buy a print of the original art AND the documentary direct from Peter Saville and have enough money left over for everything JD ever put out EVER.

I'm sure this very limited run will get bought up by scalpers/collectors, but boy oh boy have they ever misjudged that target market. We're talking about a fanbase that gets their wardrobe from the thrift store and their music from Limewire.

    more MS BS

Apple did it with U2 - who cares, and they moved on.
MS following apple's lead AGAIN - doing it with an obscure band with a smaller fan base -

the only way MS could innovate was if they got rid of entire board of directors and replaced them with REAL chimps.
