Time Warner Cable to add Internet video to TV service

updated 05:30 pm EDT, Fri May 30, 2008

Time Warner Internet TV

Time Warner Cable revealed today it plans to offer a wireless cable modem to subscribers that will allow them to network all of their household electronic devices and bring Internet content directly to their TVs. The report suggests users will be able to call up Internet TV via their home theater set-ups, with image quality that is optimized for HDTVs.

The cable company's Chief Executive, Glen Britt, made the announcement at the Sanford C. Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference in New York, revealing few details.

"Within a relatively short time... it's going to be very easy to get Internet TV on your big screen TV," he said, adding it would take about one or two years before the technology is popular. Competing products, such as Apple TV and TiVo's recording service, are already in use, with benefits that include on-demand service, full playback control and no interruptions from commercials.

There was no mention of release dates or pricing for the service.
