MS plans "minimum" 50% growth in Win Mobile

Microsoft expects sales of phones with Windows Mobile to grow at least 50 percent per year for the company's next two fiscal years, according to statements made by the company's Asian OEM manager Eddie Wu on Tuesday. The company reiterated that it hopes to sell 20 million phones over its fiscal 2008 but also expects that number to grow by another 50 percent to 30 million for 2009. Such growth is considered the "minimum" and should ideally climb higher, Wu says.

The executive specifically touts quick growth in areas such as southeast Asia and India, and dismisses notions that the company's sales are lagging in established areas, claiming that both Europe and the US are "still seeing very good growth."

In the US, smartphone marketshare is currently lead by BlackBerry creator Research in Motion and followed by Apple's iPhone, while both companies typically lose share on the world stage versus phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and others that use variants on Symbian as their operating systems.

...to set the bar high. Good luck MS. Perhaps another Developers-Developers-Developers Ballmer dance will do the trick.

I smell AAPL

Should someone start circulating the perennial MSFT buying AAPL rumor? Using OS X might be the only way to crack the 50% goal.

Mobile phone is disposable, because they are so unusable, so MSFT is unable to get the captive audience it did with the desktop OS market.

would not be surprised if this actually came to fruition. this could be a case where apple's actions benefit monople$oft as companies who fear becoming irrelevant look for an os that will attempt to keep up with OS X Mobile.

Ah! So the phone maker and the phone companies don't sell the phones. Microsoft does. Didn't know that?

MS has been planning a lot of things lately. What they should be planning is their exit or their funeral. Those idiots can't deliver a single piece of decent code if their lives depended on it. The days of taken advantage of the ignorant masses are very much over.

With the mobile internet becoming more and more important, for Microsoft to reach its goal it will have to provide a mobile browser that does not suck. Pocket Internet Explorer is so lacking in capability that it's hard to know where to begin in listing its defects.

If use of WinMo increases, it sure won't be because of the browser. On the other hand, many people will buy the Apple iPhone because of the browser alone. Service-provider stats show that use of Mobile Safari exceeds that of all other mobile browsers by a factor of up to 30!
