Apple No. 2 behind Amazon on BW InfoTech 100

updated 12:50 am EDT, Fri May 23, 2008

Amazon tops InfoTech 100

BusinessWeek on Thursday unveiled its InfoTech 100 ranked list of the world's top performing companies, with Amazon again claiming first place ahead of Apple and BlackBerry maker RIM. Amazon's reign continues from last year, as it vaulted from 23rd place to first, putting it ahead of wireless giant Nokia, Google, and Microsoft. Apple climbed four spaces from sixth place, based on its financial performance and revenue growth.

Nintendo and Western Digital round out the top five, while America Movil, China Mobile, Nokia, Asustek and High Tech Computer complete the top 10.

Most notably, the ranking has further diminished in terms of quantity of US companies, accounting for only a third of all companies on the list, down from 43 in 2007, and 75 when the annual event started in 1998.

    Does this rating

... mean anything but some editor picking companies he thinks belong in the race and sort them by financial results?

What about content providers, media conglomerates, news agencies, ... Aren't all computer makers, software makers, internet providers subject to this rating? Don't tell me RIM is more profitable financially than large media conglomerates and computer makers... The best tech today to get information is not you cell phone, it's your computer or you TV set.

or else I didn't get it.

    Guys, get a life

I read MacNN every day and don't understand why a few of you live to criticize them, either erroneously or for trivial things.

sixcolors: "6=2?" what are you talking about? They say: "Apple No. 2 behind Amazon", then later: "Apple climbed four spaces from sixth place", which means that Apple was number 6 last year, and is now number 2 (four places higher than 6) this year. I don't understand what you're criticizing.

And there's another guy who just can't wait to jump on any article which doesn't explicitly mention the Mac, with a: "what does have to do with a Macintosh news site!?!" comment. An article about Windows Vista has recently elicited this poster's rebuke, apparently not understanding that much of the Mac's recent surge in sales is directly related to the crappy performance of Windows Vista. But why should he be so torked off about this in the first place? Geez!

MacNN is an excellent source of Mac and Mac-related industry news. They update several times a day and do a good job keeping us up-to-date on the goings on in the world of Macintosh (which includes Windows and other non-"Mac" products). I suggest you quit looking to nit-pick the site and enjoy it for what it has to offer.
