Microsoft loses phone suit vs. Alcatel-Lucent

MS Loses Alcatel Suit

Microsoft on Wednesday lost a lawsuit it had filed against Alcatel-Lucent over patents relating to telephone-to-Internet technologies. The US-based International Trade Commission has absolved Alcatel-Lucent of claims that it had infringed four patents for the bridging technology, further reversing an initial decision that had found the company culpable of infringing on at least one patent.

Alcatel-Lucent declares itself vindicated by the decision, while Microsoft is "disappointed" with the results and hopes to examine the findings for the official reasoning. Company representative David Bowermaster doesn't say whether Microsoft expects to appeal the ruling.

Both Alcatel-Lucent and Microsoft have traded lawsuits against each other in recent years over perceived patent violations, with most suits stemming from Alcatel-Lucent's accusations of infringement regarding MP3 technology, game consoles, and terminal screen patents.
