Microsoft sees 40% smartphone share by 2012

Microsoft smartphone share

As Apple prepares its iPhone 2.0 platform, Microsoft is reportedly anticipating control of 40-percent of the smartphone market by 2012, according to a representative within the company. PC World writes that the endeavor will be trying, considering the company currently sits at 13-percent share, with Symbian taking first place at 67-percent, and BlackBerry devices at 10-percent. The upcoming, highly-anticipated Google Android OS is also a large unknown factor against the claim.

Microsoft's primary strengths draw from companies such as HTC – currently the world's largest manufacturer of Windows Mobile-based devices – and its touch screen phones, such as the new HTC Touch Diamond.

Overall, Microsoft expects to almost double its sales, from 11 million handsets during fiscal 2007, to almost 20 million in 2008.

they can see it. It won't be MS's share, but they'll be able to see it.

They couldn't get 40% BEFORE the iPhone started embarassing Windows Mobile. My work phone (HTC Mogul) has version 6 on it, and it's miserable. I was trying to use Google Maps and MapQuest on it yesterday to find an address when I was in the field, and crappy IE couldn't load either site fully. I could go on about other things that are unbelievably still missing from WM even after SIX versions, but what's the point? Those idiots are definitely high if they think they're going to grab more share of the market with such a godawful product. The last numbers I saw, the 10 month-old iPhone had already reached half the share of Windows Mobile, which has been around for YEARS.

someone calling himself 'testudo' actually made a witty comment. It can't possibly be the troll we know as testudo. Must be an impostor.

By 2012, teenagers will be asking what this thing called Microsoft was all about and why they vanished so fast.

Maybe they can. They have unlimited funds to keep money losing laughable product in the market. Eventually they'll wear down the competition. hehe

Market Share es bueno

MS could get there... on the back of Window's Market Share. Market Share enables you to do, attempt, leverage, and dictate so much. Because of Market Share, MS doesn't need any new computers to be sold to sell tens of millions (or 100s of millions, if you believe their numbers) of products.

Apple enjoys the benefits of market share with the iPod and iTunes. And they have a real chance to gain commanding market share with the iPhone and the way they seem to be responding to International markets.

Even though Steve Jobs said, "The PC wars are over. Microsoft won," Apple still could gain significant computer market share (in spite of their many business blunders through the years)... if they offered a low-cost tower.

It always comes back to a low-cost tower, Steve.

how many billion..?

05/14, 07:20am reply

40% Share..yes but how many billion are they prepared to lose to achieve this? Remember that the whole X-Box adventure has cost M$ more than five billion. It's gonna take the royalty on a lot of games to claw that back! Share doesn't mean profit, just like Youtube, Facebook etc. despite their market caps don't make any sodding money!!!!
