Eee PC 900 goes on sale

As promised, ASUS' Eee PC 900 micro notebook today went on sale in the US. The 8.9-inch computer's specifications remain the same and take the Eee slightly further upscale with a sharper 1024x600 resolution, a basic multi-touch trackpad, and a 1.3-megapixel camera. Versions hold either 12GB of flash storage on Windows XP models or else 20GB on versions with the less expensive Linux operating system, though either can accept SD and SDHC cards. Launch models continue to use a 900MHz Celeron M processor rather than the Intel Atom planned for later editions.

Many stores already list the Eee PC as in stock, though some outlets such as Buy.com and ZipZoomFly are currently commanding a premium of $15 to $50 above the official $550 price. An Amazon listing, however, currently shows the 20GB Linux notebook available at the official $550 price in the computer's standard white color trim.

8GB of flash is under $50... so Microsoft's willing to sell XP pretty damn cheap to keep Linux from undercutting Windows in the clamshell market...

I've seen and tried the first eeePC and it is too close to the price of cheap Windows laptops whilst not being anywhere near them in features or capacity.

Having said that I saw a recent news story on 2 Aussies who are going to cross Victoria Island in the Arctic Circle on sled/kayak and are using an eeePC/sat phone combo to keep in touch. So maybe they fill that niche of the lost Aussies in Arctic Wilderness market s:-)

This article from Electronista (MacNN's Edgadget wannabe site) was linked on the front page of MacNN. That doesn't seem appropriate-- this story has nothing to do with the Mac.

The Eee PC is of interest to the Mac community because you can install OS X on it. Its a very popular project system for hackintosh enthusiasts.
