Sony unveils HS1 home media server

Complementing its TP HD home theater PC, Sony on Wednesday rolled out a new home server. The 1TB HS1 and its 1.5TB HS1S counterpart are some of the first VAIO extenders offered by Sony and are built expressly to share content automatically: PCs with Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) compatible software, as well as devices such as the PlayStation 3, can automatically find content from the HS1 and stream it over a gigabit Ethernet link.

Either HS1 model supports multiple audio and video formats, including AAC, ATRAC, MP3, and WMA for music as well as H.264 (AVCHD) and MPEG-2 up to HD resolutions; owners of digital cameras or flash drives can load up the servers from Memory Stick or SD card readers as well as from any one of three USB ports.

Sony is initially launching the HS1 lineup in Japan, where it arrives on May 17th at anticipated prices of $570 for the base HS1 and $760 for the range-topping HS1S version. American announcements are unknown, but may appear given the existence of the TP HD in the country. [via Impress]
